Iqbal, Dickinson, and Khwaja Hasan Nizami: At the Crossroads of Scholarly and Intellectual Differences.

The grandeur of Mathnawi "Assrare-Khudi, with its uniquely inspiring thought content, sent shock waves to some academic and religious circles. As Iqbal has pointed out, there is a glaring difference and conflict between the religious conscience of Islam and the prevalent mystical tradition of wahdat ul wojood (Unity of Existence) under the influence of Ibne Arabi and Hafiz Shirazi. The people who were staunchly following the above-mentioned mystical tradition opened up a front against Iqbal with a malicious war of words. This front was opened up by some religious stalwarts and orientalists; amongst them were Khaja Hassan Nizami and Dickenson. In this article, Iqbal's logical defence of his poetic manifesto in the form of his epigramatic Mathnawi "Assrar e Khudi has been brought into light. Miscomprehension of Iqbal's terms, symbols, and meanings led to the objections raised by some stalwarts; Iqbal answered these objections with scholarly wisdom.
