Abstract

This research article presents a comprehensive critical and analytical evaluation of Naila Tabassum Akram’s short story collection, "Qarz-e-Hasna". The study explores the socio-psychological horizons of twentieth and twenty-first-century Urdu fiction as reflected in her work. Through a meticulous examination of selected short stories including Kisi Khanqah Mein Jal Bujha, Iltibas-e-Mohabbat, Do Haath Ki Chooriyan, Marham, Khudgharzh, Iddat, Qarz-e-Hasna, Buzdil, Qabristan-e-Lawaris Qaidi, Chupke Se Bahar Aa Jaye, Mere Mazdoor Is Daur Ke Kohkan, and Hayolay this paper dissects themes of selfless love, deep emotional deprivation, female consciousness, class exploitation, and psychological conflicts. Utilizing literary tools such as round characterization, interior monologues, complex metaphors, and layered symbolism (e.g., shrines, mist, and desolate graveyards), Akram unveils the stark realities of human existence. The article critically highlights her artistic prowess in blending urban and rural dialects while maintaining intense emotional resonance, establishing "Qarz-e-Hasna" as a significant milestone in contemporary Urdu literary criticism.
