Abstract

Literature and society are strongly inter related as literature mirrors society and affects it so much as to bring numerous changes. Literature is just like a stone that produces ripples in a pool. Any changing in society affects the whole fabric of literature because literature gets raw material from society. Disasters directly affect both literature and writer. The writer, who is a sensitive citizen, finds attraction in disasters and gets effective material. Most of the best seller and popular books are related to war or revolution. We can categorize them as disaster. In Urdu fiction, we can divide disasters into two classifications: first Natural disaster and second is human instigated. Various phenomenons like earthquakes, famine, floods and epidemics are all natural disasters that kill thousands of people and destroy economy of many countries. There is no period in man’s history which is safe from these natural disasters. That is why we find literature about these disasters in every language of the world. Even Urdu literature also reflects the impacts of these disasters on society. Famines are extreme shortage of food that results in high rates of mortality. People facing famine show the symptoms of fat loss, depression, severe weakness which result in immobility and eventually the death of the poor victims. Besides physical impacts, there are lots of social consequences of famines e.g migration of people, disturbance in social behaviours and loss of pride and dignity.
