NON-FICTION PROSE-SOCIO-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES OF WOMEN IN THE COLONIAL ERA

Abstract

19th century is the century of changes when Urdu prose progressed a lot, not only in the terms of quantity but in the context of trends too. Colonialism is the factor which changed the socio-political scenario of the sub-continent. Urdu non Fictional Prose was written abundantly in colonial period of sub-continent. Women non- fictional writers tried to present the women’s problem and focused  their individual identity through their  autobiographies which are the basic document to study the mental structure and behavior of women in colonial era . These writings are not short in numbers as well, as six autobiographies including Hayat e Qudsi,Tazkira Baqi, Tuzk e Sultani, Gohar e Iqbal, Hayat e Shahjhani, was written by Sultan Jahan Begum. This study will identify the colonial, cultural and modified traditional situation in these writings.
